[HowTo] Find the Best Web Hosting Service for Your Blog
Whenever we want to start a blog, the first thing that comes to the mind is, Google Blogspot and WordPress.org. Well , wordpress does provide the scripts to host your own blog with the
help of any reliable hosting service. When we started this blog couple of years ago, we were new to the field and we really struggled a lot for the entire blog setup. So we thought of
sharing the experience with you. When you want to host your blog independently, the first thing you need to do is to buy a domain. You can also use many free domains available. Once you have the domain, you need to buy the hosting service. Then link the domain to the hosting service

What type of the server I want ?

If you want to start a wordpress based website, you would need a server that supports PHP + MySQL. We recommend Apache server.

How to Choose between hosting service providers ?

Many people always get confused when they are about to buy a hosting service. Let us explain how exactly you can choose the perfect hosting service for the blog. First we need to list
the several key features that would differentiate between the hosting services based on your needs. Those are

– Number of addon domains supported.

– Number of subdomains supported.

– Monthly bandwidth and the Server Disk space avaialable.

– Number of MySQL databases.

– Uptime Guarantee.

– Number of Email accounts supported.

– Technical support.

People who are new to Blogging always try to jump into the rapid decision of buying the hosting service by looking into the features like “Unlimited Space” and “Unlimited
Bandwidth”.Never ever do that !

Disk space or the banwidth your blog uses are not the criteria anymore but the amount of CPU usage (or memeory usage) is. If your blog uses more server resources than expected (which the hosting service has specified in the policy) , you will be in the risk of your account being suspended or bottlenecked for safety (called throttling).

We will now review the hosting services we were with. And we will share the experiences.

Relatively inexpensive webhosting providers

We bought a service at the total cost of $15 per annum. The service was good until our blog got 50 visitors, after that we got 404 errors, long running SQL queries and frequent WSOD
(White Screen of Death) in our wordpress control panel for no reasons. Technical support people were never able to address these issues.

GoDaddy Web Hosting service.

No doubt, GoDaddy is the biggest domain seller. When it comes to WordPress hosting, we had a terrible experience with them. Few issues we faced were,

– Technical support only answers your queries after 24 hours.

– Most of the times, Support people will redirect you to their generic help page.

– Our Google webmaster tools were showing lot of error messages , which was caused by 302 redirections.

– No unlimited emails, No CPANEL access.

– No live chat option.

Best thing was , they guarantee moneyback. We filed for the refund and moved out of GoDaddy.

Host Monster / Bluehost Web Hosting service.

mytechyard.com currently running on the HostMonster / Bluehost web hosting service. Till now , we did not have major issues with the blog. Except in few cases were our account was
throttled for few seconds. Some of the key points with Bluehost / HostMonster are

– Awesome Technical support.

– Live chat option.

– Unlimted bandwidth, diskspace, email and MySQL databases.

– One free domain.

– Unlimited addon domains.

During our blog move, we used live chat option as we were facing some issues in setup. The technical support person was able to resolve the issue in less than 5 minutes!

Conclusion

We just compared two of the top webhosting providers. Based on the parameters , you can always choose the better option that suits you the best (listed as key features above). Once

your blog gets decent traffic, you can always move the blog to VPS or the dedicated hosting. For those types of servers , you can stick to HostGator.

Feel free to share your experiences too, your comments adds few more points to our readers!

  1. Nice Post… but I brought web hosting at only Rs.348/year with unlimited cpanel and tech support. I run my WordPress blog very smoothly. Means if we try to find best hosting,we do not think about feature just have to consider about company past and service. And important thing is not to buy hosting from Indian web host.
